350mA Constant Current LED Driver: 8.8 mm Wide, 5–48 V
Power LEDs in tight control cabinets with the ultra-thin 8.8 mm DIN rail converter. No electrolytic capacitors — built for decades of continuous operation.
- 8.8 mm DIN rail width
- 5–48 V input range
- 0 electrolytic capacitors
Why the LED48-350 outlasts conventional drivers
Eliminate the primary failure mechanism in LED drivers. Electrolytic capacitors dry out over time, degrading performance and causing early field failures. The LED48-350 uses no electrolytics — all 15 µF of input capacitance is implemented with solid, long-life dielectrics. Combined with an operating range of -40 °C to +50 °C without derating, it’s built for sealed, hot luminaire enclosures and continuous operation over decades.
Built-in protections that prevent field returns
No damaged drivers from common wiring faults. The LED48-350 shrugs off the mistakes that kill ordinary converters:
- Reverse polarity (up to -48 V DC) — no blown fuse or PCB trace.
- Indefinite output short-circuit — survives continuous fault conditions.
- Open-circuit safe — run with no load indefinitely.
- Input and output TVS diodes (2× SMAJ26A at input, SMAJ48A at output) clamp transients and inductive spikes from hot-disconnect, protecting both the driver and the LED string.
8.8 mm width: fit more drivers per meter of DIN rail
Pack 5 drivers into the space of one typical unit. At just 8.8 mm wide, the LED48-350 slides into the narrowest gaps in your control cabinet. You can drive multiple LED strings side by side without wasting rail space — critical for high-density automation panels and OEM luminaire controllers.
Stable 350 mA current from 5 to 48 V
Consistent light output regardless of input bus voltage. The output current varies less than 10% across the full string voltage range — from ~382 mA at 5 V to ~340 mA at 45 V with 48 V input. That means your luminaire photometric performance stays predictable, even when the supply bus dips or spikes.
High efficiency with long LED strings. Efficiency climbs from ~70% at low string voltages to over 97% with a 45 V string — meaning nearly all input power is converted to light. For best results, design your string voltage as high as possible within the U_in − 2 V limit.
How the LED48-350 removes your reliability risk
| Criterion | Typical DC/DC converter | LED48-350 |
|---|---|---|
| DIN rail width | 22.5 mm or more | 8.8 mm |
| Input voltage range | 9–36 V or 18–75 V | 5–48 V (extends to 12/24/48 V buses) |
| Electrolytic capacitors | Often used, limited life | None — solid dielectrics only |
| Short-circuit protection | Time-limited or requires external fuse | Indefinite, auto-recovery |
| Efficiency at high string voltage | ~85% typical | Up to 97% |
Removing electrolytic capacitors eliminates the single largest wear-out mechanism in switching converters. The LED48-350 implements the entire input filter with solid, long-life dielectrics — designed to maintain stable operation over decades of continuous service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a constant-current or constant-voltage driver, and what current does it deliver?
Constant current only — it is not a voltage-regulated supply. The LED48-350 ordercode is rated 350 mA (typ 360 mA, spec range 330–385 mA); the LED48-500 variant is rated 500 mA (typ 500 mA, range 450–530 mA). Output voltage floats up to U_in − 2 V; the device is not usable as a general-purpose DC/DC converter.
What input voltage range is supported?
5 V to 48 V DC. The 5 V minimum is unusually low for a 48 V-class driver, making the LED48-xxx usable on 12 V and 24 V bus systems as well as 48 V. The maximum LED string voltage is U_in − 2 V — so at 5 V input the string can be at most ~3 V (a single high-power LED).
What is the efficiency, and how does LED string voltage affect it?
Efficiency rises strongly with string voltage. At U_in = 48 V the LED48-350 reaches ~70 % at 5 V string voltage and ~97 % at 45 V. Long high-voltage strings extract nearly all input power as light; single-LED or low-voltage strings waste a significant fraction as converter heat.
What protection mechanisms are provided, and can the output be left open or shorted?
Yes to both. Reverse polarity protection up to -48 V DC at the input, indefinite short-circuit protection at the output, indefinite open-circuit safe operation. Both input (2× SMAJ26A) and output (SMAJ48A) TVS diodes clamp transients — the output TVS notably protects against inductive spikes when the LED string is hot-disconnected.
Does the LED48-350 require an external current-sense resistor or control signal?
No — fully self-contained. The 350 mA current level is fixed in hardware; there is no dimming input, enable pin, or analogue control interface. For PWM dimming, switch the input voltage externally; the device itself provides no dimming function. Contact DPS for a dimmable or adjustable-current variant.
What is the thermal operating range, and are electrolytic capacitors used?
-40 °C to +50 °C with no derating curve stated, and no electrolytic capacitors anywhere in the design. Removing electrolytics eliminates the primary ageing mechanism in switching converters, supporting long service life in sealed or hot luminaire enclosures. The 15 µF input capacitance is implemented with non-electrolytic types.
